How lucky am I that I get to spend all day with 45 fifth graders who come to school every day excited to learn? In my classroom we work on reading, writing, and social studies, and I get to inspire my students to love books and the history of their country. My goal with this grant is to incorporate more technology into their learning. As digital natives, my students live in a world filled with technology and it is my responsibility to guide them in proper and safe usage, along with exposing them to the endless resources available at their fingertips.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 47

My fifth grade students have loved their new iPads!  They have used their new technology for research projects, social studies map games, weekly iReady literacy lessons, coding apps, grammar games, and so much more!  They have even taken virtual field trips to Jamestown and Washington D.C. as we have been studying American History and the founding of our nation.  Students love the flexibility they have in using portable devices in the classroom so they can choose a seat where they are comfortable working.  We have even been able to spend time learning and practicing outside the classroom at the picnic table using the ipads, which was a fantastic way to engage students in a flexible setting.  Students have also been able to practice their collaboration skills and teamwork strategies by working with partners and small groups and sharing their thoughts and ideas.  I'm very thankful for your donation, and will be able to use these iPads with future students for many years to come.  Thank you again for your generosity and thoughtfulness!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

How lucky am I that I get to spend all day with 45 fifth graders who come to school every day excited to learn? In my classroom we work on reading, writing, and social studies, and I get to inspire my students to love books and the history of their country. My goal with this grant is to incorporate more technology into their learning. As digital natives, my students live in a world filled with technology and it is my responsibility to guide them in proper and safe usage, along with exposing them to the endless resources available at their fingertips.

What will be done with my students

Throughout our school day we use technology in many ways. Students can use iPads to work on their i-Ready reading lessons that are tailored specifically to their own needs, they can take Reading Counts comprehension quizzes on books they have read, they can use an app that provides them with an ad free comprehensive dictionary and thesaurus, they can study the geography of the United States with learning games created to help them learn state locations and capitals, they can do research for their passion projects during Genius Hour or for other classroom projects, and the list continues. As a teacher, iPads in the hands of students is valuable to give me instant feedback on their learning during a lesson via the use of educational apps like Classkick, SeeSaw, Educreations, Nearpod, Flipgrid, and Quizizz. These apps also allow students to use the creative side of their brain when responding to standards based questions, and with teacher approval they can respond to their classmates answers.

Benefits to my students

Technology in the classroom brings real world experiences into our own hands. Students can take virtual field trips, connect with other students around the world, create presentations on their research, and so much more, all while having fun! It's amazing what a ten year old will tell you while recording their response to reading on the FlipGrid app compared to what that same student would say out loud or write in their journal, or what a student can create to show their understanding of a concept that they otherwise wouldn't demonstrate via paper and pencil. These devices and apps truly give all students a voice to share their learning and student engagement is at high when they are interacting with technology and deepening their learning in a way they enjoy.

Budget Narrative

I am requesting two iPads that must be purchased from Apple through the school district, two AirWatch software licenses which are also required by the district to protect devices on wifi and manage the apps, along with two protective cases for the iPads.
