Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 200

The Storyworks magazine subscription granted by Women in Naples Giving Support (WING) was the perfect addition to our 6th grade curriculum at CMS. The number one outcome was the stories got kids reading about current and relevant events/issues. For example, one of the stories that made a huge impression was Beauty and Disaster, the continuous eruption of Kilauea, April 2018. While studying how natural disasters affect people, we were able to read about this eruption, study photos, conduct research, while making connections through the eyes of children who lived through it. Many students said that by reading and learning about volcanoes in language arts helped them in science. The volcano study inspired students to read and learn about hurricanes from the past, like the Galveston hurricane of 1900.

The second outcome is that kids enjoyed the magazines. Having reading material available that is on their reading level, shorter than other texts, and sparks their interests was and is paramount in “getting” children to want to read. Third outcome, just one subscription provided reading material for three language arts classes’ times two, and then later the magazines were passed to additional 6th grade classes. There were so many more stories the students enjoyed each contributing to our weekly class discussions, priceless

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this grant is to provide students with the opportunity to read about current events and other issues happening in our nation and the world. This magazine supports and compliments our School-wide reading and writing goals.

What will be done with my students

On a weekly/monthly basis students be reading different stories, fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, about the world around them. Many of the articles lend itself for research and debate on topics presented. Students will be asked to conduct research and find out more about different issues, take a position, and inform peers. This will occur through projects, presentations, debates, and a multitude of writing response activities that are aligned specifically to 6th grade students and their curriculum.

Benefits to my students

In our digital world children are not exposed to printed news, as in the past. Sixth graders at CMS will have the ability to hold the text, see photographs, and read articles from a peer's point of view on a variety of topics that connect to science, social studies, and social issues. Having this exposure will increase each child's experiences (broaden their horizons) and additionally help in shaping his or her perspective on current events. This magazine is written specifically for their age group and has stories of interest for them.
