   Key Outcomes

This year, elementary students at First Baptist Academy assisted in planning and planting a school vegetable  garden. The theme for this year's garden was Holy Lands Garden.  Students and parents helped with fall garden clean up to prepare for planting.  In addition to Florida friendly vegetables , specific plants that thrive in Isreal were selected for the garden. This included a fig tree, an olive tree, grapes, herbs, a crown of thorns , a rose, a Moses in the Bullrush plant, and a Citron plant .

Benefits for Students and Teachers

The Holy Lands Garden provides numerous opportunities for outdoor, hands-on, project based learning. Grade 3 went on a Bible Trivia Treasure Hunt in the garden using srcripture references to locate and identify specific biblical plants and those used in traditional Jewish festivals ( ex. Feast of Tabernacles).

K students measured and recorded plant growth. Students in grade 4 observed specific Florida native plants, fruit trees and vegetables as a focus of their Florida history unit.  Students in 5th grade learned about fulfilling the Great cutural mandate of stewardship over the earth by helping to weed , water, and harvest vegetables from the school garden. Students in grade 2 used the garden as a  Plant Life Cycles resource. PK students sorted and tasted a variety of farm fresh garden tomatoes.
