Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 13

The grant was originally written to impact 15 students. We had 13 learners in our classroom who directly benefitted from the daily vocational instruction allowing them to explore their potential as entrepreneurs through the Barron Beanery; however, the coffee shop grew to effect an innumerable number of students and teachers. The influence the coffee shop had on the entire school was invaluable. Prior to having the coffee shop, our students didn’t have the opportunity to meet many of the other students in the school. Through the development of the Barron Beanery, they had daily conversations with their customers, which have further developed into friendships.

The key outcomes of the project were attaining various entrepreneurial, financial, hospitality and social skills. The students also gained confidence and enlarged their circle of friends. One student who took his entrepreneurial skills and started a home business of walking dogs. He is finishing our program this month and has plans to become a barista!

The profit from the Barron Beanery has allowed us to create a positive behavioral incentive program which rewards our Quality Employee of the Month with a small gift. We have also been able to go on two Community Based Instruction (CBI) trips including some of our new partners we made at the coffee shop and purchase class T-shirts. The students wanted to pay forward some their successes and chose to donate to Pennies for Pasta, which benefits the Leukemia Society, the students gave a donation to a Baron Collier family who lost their home in a fire and made coffee for teachers to recognize them during teacher appreciation week.

The grant provided us with an invaluable learning experience. We are forever grateful to our donors and hope to continue The Barron Beanery in the future.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this classroom based enterprise is to enable students with disabilities to explore their potential as entrepreneurs and develop the skills necessary to plan and operate a business with support and assistance. This opportunity will also further develop the knowledge and skills related to careers in the coffee/hospitality industry and increase work-related behaviors through guided vocational practice at our Barron Beanery Coffee Shop

What will be done with my students

Students will begin the process by surveying their potential customers to generate a menu, determine prices, best location, and interests of their clients. They will then create a business name, logo, and mission statement. Students will continue planning by conducting research, practice comparable shopping, and making calculations to determine the cost of each item. Students will vote in the classroom to make business based decisions. In addition to the pre-planning portion of the entrepreneurship, the students will make the coffee, serve, deliver, collect and count the money, make change, write bank deposit slips, determine profits, and demonstrate financial-management concepts, procedures and strategies related to business ownership.

Benefits to my students

The benefits of the Barron Beanery are numerus and invaluable. With this opportunity, The Barron Baristas (my students) will gain confidence, learn the importance of ethics in business, develop effective working relationships to accomplish tasks, learn intrapersonal and critical thinking skills, practice safety and good hygiene, improve social and communication skills, as well as, functional academic skills. All of these skills will increase the likelihood of the students obtaining and maintaining successful employment in the future.
