Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 54

This grant impacted fifty-four Cambridge students in grades 3rd-5th at Naples Park Elementary.  Margaret Cardillo’s books Just Being Jackie and Just Being Audrey were inspirations with students learning about the genre biography.  Students got an opportunity to meet a real-life author, enjoy her storytelling, and ask questions about the writing process Margaret Cardillo’s presentation sparked the creativity in students’ imagination to create their own piece of writing.  Each Cambridge class got an autographed copy of Margaret Cardillo’s books along with a class set of blank books to write their own books.  Third grade students wrote their own autobiographies with creativity about their favorite year in school, favorite traditions, and their families. These were shared with the entire school and Naples Park families at Literacy Night in January.  Thank you for this amazing opportunity to inspire students to step out of their comfort zone and explore a different genre.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

This project will encourage students to understand, commit, and be passionate about the writing process. It will allow students to experience a final writing product within the genre of biography. Each student will have the opportunity to interview, research, write, edit, revise, and publish a biography about someone they know who has influenced their lives or an autobiography based on their own life.

What will be done with my students

Students will have a launch into excitement about the writing process by meeting an amazing local author, Margaret Cardillo. She is well known for her works, Just Being Audrey, and Just Being Jackie. Students will be able to learn the process that is followed by compiling information and the process for writing an account of a person's life. A question and answer session will allow students to connect their learning to a project which they will embark upon.

Benefits to my students

The classes will have the opportunity to be taught how the writing process takes place. They will realize the perseverance and the time frame necessary to take an idea through the writing process to completion. Students in four Cambridge classes (grades 3, 4 and 5) will benefit from this exciting experience.
