Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 50

Our Book Club has just finished Letters to the Lost by Brigid Kemmerer and they are super excited to be Skyping with the author on March 29th! Some of the themes that we have discussed are stereotyping, grief, and friendship, all worthwhile topics for not only high school students, but any age.  Students have had spirited discussions about the characters and plot line and despite their different opinions, the majority of students rated this book highly.

When we meet the author (virtually via Skype), students will be coming up with questions for the author and will be speaking with her directly.  Many questions will be about what influenced her in writing this book as well as what her life is like as an author.  Some of our Book Club students are interested in writing, too, and this experience may inspire some to get started.

We look forward to sharing this book with our school and may expand this into a "whole school read" next school year.  If this happens, Book Club will be the leaders on the forefront of conversations to be had with the school community.

What will be done with my students

LWTHS's Book Club is thriving this year and they are hungry for books! We will read Letters to the Lost as a club and will be meeting the author virtually (via Skype or similar) in March to discuss the book with her. Students will create questions for the author as well as discuss themes, characters, and issues that stand out to them in the story.

Benefits to my students

Book Club students will continue to celebrate literacy together with a shared reading experience. Students will discuss issues that arise in the story, adding to their Social-Emotional Learning. Students will be able to meet (virtually) the author in March.
