One of our school goals is to increase student comprehension through the use of the Reading Counts Program. Our steps to accomplish this goal is to provide students with frequent opportunities to check out library books using their individual Lexile Reading Level. Thus, instilling a love for reading in both fiction and non-fiction text.

This program is facilitated by Susan Pratt (Media Specialist), Susie Summers (Reading Coach) and Michelle Krohn (Reading Coach).

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 250

To celebrate students earning 30 or more points during quarter 2 in Reading Counts, each student recieved a shirt that said "I hit a home run in Reading Counts!" This went with our quarter 2 reading counts celebration theme of "Take me out to the ballgame," where students ate hotdogs and played games. This benefited students because they felt like they were extra special because only they recieved the t-shirts for meeting their goal. Students were allowed to wear their shirts every Friday to show their pride in meeting their goal for the remainder of the school year. They were highly motivated to keep reading and reach their next goal of 30 or more points for quarter 3 and make it to the reading counts celebration in March. This definitely did motivate other students who did not make it to the quarter 2 reading counts celebration because at our quarter 3 reading counts celerbation in March, we had about 100 more students attend then in quarter 2. Students were so happy and thankful!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

One of our school goals is to increase student comprehension through the use of the Reading Counts Program. Our steps to accomplish this goal is to provide students with frequent opportunities to check out library books using their individual Lexile Reading Level. Thus, instilling a love for reading in both fiction and non-fiction text.

This program is facilitated by Susan Pratt (Media Specialist), Susie Summers (Reading Coach) and Michelle Krohn (Reading Coach).

What will be done with my students

We are applying for this grant in order to purchase our quarter 2 Reading Counts reward for students meeting their individual point goal for quarter 2. We would like to celebrate students meeting their quarter 2 goal by purchasing a "baseball t-shirt" for each student that says, "I hit a home run in Reading Counts!" Students will receive their shirts at our quarter 2 Reading Counts celebration in the middle of January 2019. The theme of this celebration is, "Take me out to the ball game." They will be able to wear their shirts at the celebration and also the remainder of the school year to show pride in reaching their reading goals.

Benefits to my students

The benefit of the program is that students will be self motivated to continue their independent reading through the accumulation of reading counts points. Students will also increase their comprehension skills through non-fiction and fiction text.

*This grant is for KG-5th grade students.

*We really vamped up our Reading Counts Program last year and had a successful year. We want to continue this momentum and love for reading through the Reading Counts Program and see even more success this school year.
