One of our school goals is to increase student comprehension through the use of the Reading Counts Program. Our steps to accomplish this goal is to provide students with frequent opportunities to check out library books using their individual Lexile Reading Level. Thus, instilling a love for reading in both fiction and non-fiction text.

This program is facilitated by Susan Pratt (Media Specialist), Susie Summers (Reading Coach) and Michelle Krohn (Reading Coach).

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 350

To celebrate students earning their 30 or more points during quarter 3, we rented a blow up slide. The students had an amazing time going down the slide with their friends. Each student was able to go down the slide 3-4 times during their scheduled time for the celebration. This benefited students because they felt they were effectively recognized for their hard work in quarter 3 for Reading Counts. They were highly motivated to keep reading to reach their next goal of 30 or more points for quarter 4 and make it to our last reading counts celebration in May. Each quarter, the number of students reading their reading counts goal has increased. I'm certain we will have a even bigger turnout at the quarter 4 reading counts celebration! Students and teachers were so thankful for this opportunity as some of our students have never had the chance to go down a slide before. Thank you!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

One of our school goals is to increase student comprehension through the use of the Reading Counts Program. Our steps to accomplish this goal is to provide students with frequent opportunities to check out library books using their individual Lexile Reading Level. Thus, instilling a love for reading in both fiction and non-fiction text.

This program is facilitated by Susan Pratt (Media Specialist), Susie Summers (Reading Coach) and Michelle Krohn (Reading Coach).

What will be done with my students

We are applying for this grant in order to purchase our quarter 3 Reading Counts reward for students meeting their individual point goal for quarter 3. We would like to celebrate students meeting their quarter 3 goal by renting a blow up slide for our quarter 3 reading counts celebration in March 2019.

Benefits to my students

The benefit of the program is that students will be self motivated to continue their independent reading through the accumulation of reading counts points. Students will also increase their comprehension skills through non-fiction and fiction text.

*This grant is for KG-5th grade students.

*We really vamped up our Reading Counts Program last year and had a successful year. We want to continue this momentum and love for reading through the Reading Counts Program and see even more success this school year.
