One of our school goals is to increase student comprehension through the use of the Reading Counts Program. Our steps to accomplish this goal is to provide students with frequent opportunities to check out library books using their individual Lexile Reading Level. Thus, instilling a love for reading in both fiction and non-fiction text.

This program is facilitated by Susan Pratt (Media Specialist), Susie Summers (Reading Coach) and Michelle Krohn (Reading Coach).

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 325

To celebrate students earning their 30 points during quarter 4 in reading counts, we rented the Kona Ice truck. The students had amazing experience with making their snowcone at the Kona Ice truck. It was perfect on the hot day that we had! This benefited students because they felt they were recognized for their hard work in quarter 4 for reading counts. Many of our students set a goal to make it to all four reading counts celebrations this year and they did! Rewards such as this one and our other celebrations this year highly motivated our students to strive and meet their reading goals. Students and teachers were so thankkful for this reward especially since some of our students have never had a snow cone before. Thank you, thank you!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

One of our school goals is to increase student comprehension through the use of the Reading Counts Program. Our steps to accomplish this goal is to provide students with frequent opportunities to check out library books using their individual Lexile Reading Level. Thus, instilling a love for reading in both fiction and non-fiction text.

This program is facilitated by Susan Pratt (Media Specialist), Susie Summers (Reading Coach) and Michelle Krohn (Reading Coach).

What will be done with my students

We are applying for this grant in order to purchase our quarter 4 Reading Counts reward for students meeting their individual point goal for quarter 4. We would like to celebrate students meeting their quarter 4 goal by renting the Kona Ice Truck that will come to our school for our quarter 4 reading counts celebration in May 2019.

Benefits to my students

The benefit of the program is that students will be self motivated to continue their independent reading through the accumulation of reading counts points. Students will also increase their comprehension skills through non-fiction and fiction text.

*This grant is for KG-5th grade students.

*We really vamped up our Reading Counts Program last year and had a successful year. We want to continue this momentum and love for reading through the Reading Counts Program and see even more success this school year.
