One of our school goals is to increase student comprehension through the use of the Reading Counts Program. Our steps to accomplish this goal is to provide students with frequent opportunities to check out library books using their individual Lexile Reading Level. Thus, instilling a love for reading in both fiction and non-fiction text.

This program is facilitated by Susan Pratt (Media Specialist), Susie Summers (Reading Coach) and Michelle Krohn (Reading Coach).

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 20

To celebrate our top 20 reading counts point students this school year, we took students on a field trip to the Barnes and Noble Book Store. They each recieved a $20 gift card to spend their and were able to pick out brand new books that interested them. While there, students also got a private tour of the store including the recieving area and ate lunch on the childrens area stage. Thie field trip benefited students because more than half of the students who attended the field trip never had been before to Barnes and Noble. Students were also very proud of themselves on their achievement in our reading counts program this year. Thank you for helping our students experience new opportunities. We are so grateful!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

One of our school goals is to increase student comprehension through the use of the Reading Counts Program. Our steps to accomplish this goal is to provide students with frequent opportunities to check out library books using their individual Lexile Reading Level. Thus, instilling a love for reading in both fiction and non-fiction text.

This program is facilitated by Susan Pratt (Media Specialist), Susie Summers (Reading Coach) and Michelle Krohn (Reading Coach).

What will be done with my students

We are applying for this grant in order to celebrate and reward our top 20 reading counts students for the 2018-2019 school year. We would like to celebrate these students by taking a field trip to our local Barnes and Noble Book Store. At the bookstore, they will get a tour of the store and receiving room to show how books are organized and put on shelves. We would like each student to receive a $20 gift card to Barnes and Noble to buy books during our field trip. This field trip and celebration will take place in May 2019.

Benefits to my students

The benefit of the program is that students will be self motivated to continue their independent reading. Students will also increase their comprehension skills through non-fiction and fiction text.

Students will also benefit from the field trip because many of our students have not been to a bookstore like Barnes and Noble before. The opportunity will inspire them to continue their reading efforts in order to be lifelong readers and learners.

*This grant is for KG-5th grade students.
