Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 381

Wow!  What a difference a toe token can make.  Before we were able to provide students with a proudly  earned  toe token it was extremely difficult to motivate them to walk any distance much less run.  Thanks to your donation, Perna-Rose Foundation and Michael Schroeder, we were able to turn that mindset around in a big way.  Our students started to push themselves to complete distance goals that they created for the week.  Once a few students earned the very first toe tokens the others started pushing themselves harder to get one for themselves!  We even had to open this program up during physical education classes due to the amount of students that wanted to participate and have every lap count toward their personal goals.  The monthly motivators brought in an added push to complete a mile within the time allotted for the run program.  I am proud to report that our students accumulated 6,040 miles during the time from when the program was implemented until March.  Unfortunately, the coronavirus has shut down our program temporarily.  However, with the purchase of "brain" toe tokens, my co-teacher and I plan to award students that submit exceptional cardio drumming routines at the end of the dance unit we have posted online as a way to continue their physical education program.  It may be a divergence from the initial intended purpose but is still rewarding students for their grit and dedication to stay physically active during this time.   Thank you again for your generosity.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Our goal is to form a run club that meets before school that encourages students to create their own fitness/run goals through running and walking.

What will be done with my students

Students will run or walk before school. Their distance will be recorded each session. Every five miles accumulated by a student results in a presentation of a toe token. These tokens are proudly displayed on a necklace worn around the neck. Run club will be available throughout the school year. Students will be encouraged to participate in local running events and special themed fun runs created by their teachers. Students will be given the challenge to accumulate 100 miles during the school year.

Benefits to my students

Learning to run benefits students in many different ways. Running impacts the development of mental toughness or grit. This is something that will carry over into their academics as well as their personal character that will make a huge difference in the way they take on any challenge. Running is available to everyone almost everywhere and once the skill is developed it can be a way for the student to become and remain physically fit for a lifetime. Running before school is advantageous to our students due to the increased readiness to learn, renewed focus, and increased confidence resulting from moderate to vigorous physical activity.

Budget Narrative

Need chains for students to display tokens and the monthly motivators are fun shapes that go with each month as an extra incentive, for example September would be an apple shape.
