Our goal is for each student in grades 3 through 5 at Vineyards Elementary School to be able to 10-finger type without looking at the keys. Repeated practice with a Typing Club keyboard cover will assist students in mastering the keyboard layout through the development of their muscle memory, resulting in F.A.S.T. - focused, accurate, speedy typists!

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 450

Since implementing the Typing Club keyboard covers, the students at Vineyards Elementary School in grades 3-5 have made significant improvements in their keyboarding skills.

The covers allow them to focus on the screen instead of peeking at the keys.  Their speed and accuracy, therefore, have improved. In fact, several boys come to the morning lab each day and use the covers.  They are "competing" against each other to see who is doing better.

Thank you so much for funding this grant request.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Our goal is for each student in grades 3 through 5 at Vineyards Elementary School to be able to 10-finger type without looking at the keys. Repeated practice with a Typing Club keyboard cover will assist students in mastering the keyboard layout through the development of their muscle memory, resulting in F.A.S.T. - focused, accurate, speedy typists!

What will be done with my students

Each class period, starting in Quarter 1, begins with 10 minutes of typing practice. Students are enrolled in Typing Club, a district-provided subscription. Each student progresses at an individual pace, and accessibility accommodations can be modified in the program as needed.

Students will demonstrate their progress through friendly competitions between students and their teacher.

Student achievement will be displayed on a F.A.S.T. Bulletin Board in both technology labs.

Keyboarding is a CCPS Learning Goal where it is expected that the student will be able to apply technology keyboarding skills to daily work and projects.

Benefits to my students

There are many benefits to being a proficient touch typist. The following four are, in our opinion, the most compelling for the 425 students in grades 3 through 5 as well as the two instructional resource teachers:

1. FOCUSED: hunt-and-peck typing splits student attention between the keyboard and the monitor; using the keyboard covers can help to eliminate hunting and pecking.
2. ACCURATE: spelling errors can be minimized and work flow and concentration can improve.
3. SPEEDY: learning touch typing makes finger movements automatic; ideas can flow more naturally because students will not be distracted by hunting to find the next key.
4. TYPISTS: almost every occupation uses a keyboard; being able to touch type will make it possible for our students to communicate more efficiently, thereby opening doors for them now and in the future.

Budget Narrative

VES has two technology labs with instructional resource teachers in each. Two lab sets of covers are required. Shipping and handling ($30/class set) is included in the cost. It is our goal for students to start the year with the keyboard covers; therefore, we have a deadline of August 1. This should allow enough time for ordering and shipment. Thank you for considering our proposal.
