Ray Harman, in honor of Karen Harman - $513.89
We are inspired teachers who aim to inspire leaders one child at a time. Last year, our teachers did a book study on "The Leader in Me" by Stephen Covey in order to better understand his research based methods for schools. These resources helped us learn how to implement strong character in our school. We are seeking to provide tools for students to find their unique genius. Providing opportunities to let their genius shine, is the aim of this grant.
Every student has genius. Students need chances to lead, in order to learn important life lessons. When we charge them with planning an event, leading a group of peers, acting out a dream plan for the school, and more, we enable them to live the process, which may be full of ups and downs. These leadership lessons will allow students to develop into the self-assured and skilled people with leadership experience. These tools will provide year-after-year assistance with these initiatives.
These leadership opportunities are fostered from Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and are intended to develop students into respectful and responsible citizens who honorably take ownership of their actions.
Our students are brilliant. We owe them them the opportunity to discover their personal genius. Our students and staff will benefit from learning to (1) be proactive, (2) begin with the end in mind, (3) put first things first, (4) think win-win, (5) seek first to understand, then to be understood, (6) synergize, and to (7) sharpen the saw. When our students realize their personal genius, they will be learn to transfer their skills into their school and home lives. These lessons will allow our students to develop socially and emotionally to become the best citizens they can be.
The tools provided by this grant will be a starting point for launching our first year of leadership groups. In our first year of Leader in Me, I hope to provide students with roles such as leading our Leadership Day in May, for which they can use walkie-talkies to coordinate the festivities for our guests while communicating with each other across the campus. In addition, the yard sticks will not only help us measure but also provide tall signage a post for assigning visitors to tour locations around our campus. Student art can be planned, expressed and shared with our campus on over-sized canvas in the cafeteria and/or media center. Allowing students to earn a leadership role can be honored by providing a student designed t-shirt for which the press would be used. Finally, the "Met My Goal" is something I most look forward to hearing. Students will be setting and meeting goals throughout the school-year. By placing the bell near the front office, our students will be recognized for their hard work as they overcome each milestone.
