Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 60

The EPE Pickleball Club was a hit. We had to turn away students because we didn't have enough equipment but we looked at that as a positive and will try to add for next year. Unfortunately due to the closing of schools because of the covid 19 virus, we were not able to utilize it with the students during regular physical education class during a 3 week unit that we teach racket skills. That would have been over 400 more students who would have been impacted by the equipment funded through this grant.

The picklball club met one day a week before school this year and since it was such a big hit, we are going to make it two days a week next year as well as looking to purchase better quality nets.

The students were taught some skills and rules of the game and the routines of the club. They really enjoyed how quickly they made gains in their skills and this helped them enjoy the sport even more.

One outcome that we really enjoyed was the social aspect it brought them. Older students were helping younger students and they worked together during set up and breakdown. The equipment facilitated set up and break down in a timely manner which allowed the students more time to be active.

Another positive thing from the club was the positive response we heard from the classroom teachers who showed their appreciation for letting their students get in some physical and social activity before school.

Unfortunately, I do not have pictures to upload as I had planned to take them after spring break.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To create a pickleball club for the students in Immokalee who may never get to be exposed to the sport as well as creating an opportunity for physical activity before the school day begins. We will also do a pickleball unit with all the students in the school K-5 for 3 weeks of the year.

What will be done with my students

Students will be taught how to play pickleball and be given equipment to use to play the sport before school. We will also teach a three week pickleball unit during the school year to all the students at Eden Park Elementary K-5. We will have several students mentored as the pickleball club managers and guide them to be effective leaders.

The grant monies will be used to help purchase pickleball paddles, balls and an equipment storage cart.

Benefits to my students

Learning to play pickleball will give students self-confidence, benefit their social and emotional well being and help develop a lifetime fitness attitude. Physical activity before school also improves their readiness to learn.

Budget Narrative

Pickleball rackets are expensive and we are trying to earn funds from other places to support the club. The $400 we are asking for will be able to purchase about 20 rackets. The cart is essential for facilitating the process of getting equipment passed out to the students and returned.

Items

# Item Cost
1 pickleball rackets $400.00
2 pickleball cart $245.00
  Total: $645.00
