Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 90

Vineyards Elementary Pre-K students are ready to read!

Thanks to this grant, the Vineyards Media Center was able to purchase a collection of 38 board books for our Pre-K students to access.  Ninety Pre-K students were invited weekly to the Media Center to listen to stories and then have the opportunity to choose a board book to read.  The students were beyond excited!!!

Students were able to choose a book on topics such nursery rhymes, ocean animals, colors & shapes, things that go, farm, and family.  Also included in their library were classics such as Brown Bear Brown Bear, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and Goodnight Moon

As the books were selected, students could be heard reading the books, reciting the stories from memory or finding words that they could easily identify.  Other students partnered up to read and talk about the stories and pictures to others, while others ask to cuddle up to an adult to read the story together.

The one thing that held true for all students is that they love coming to the library and to get their hands on the books.  As William Butler Yeats once said, “Education is not the filling of a pail, but rather the lighting of a fire”. For our students, their journey into the world of reading was sparked by these books.  For that we thank you Cynthia Zane!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Our goal is to provide our youngest students with books so that they can foster a love of reading and the library.

What will be done with my students

Our Pre-K students and students with disabilities will be provided children’s literature in the form of a board book. This type of book is easy for little hands to manipulate and will endure the “love” a Pre-K student shows for books. The students will come to the Media Center and be able to access books along with read alouds to promote library skills and a desire to read.

Benefits to my students

Students will be able to develop their personal “Power of Yet”. Rather than saying “this can’t be done”. Their attitude will shift towards “this can’t be done…yet.”

Through this transformation, students will also be able to begin to see themselves as readers. They will learn concepts of print such as directionality, care and handling, and beginning reading skills. They will be able to come to the library and have access to materials that are developmentally appropriate. As our students grow in their reading, they will be able to “read” stories from the pictures, learn, and find high frequency words that appear in literature.

Budget Narrative

A collection of children’s board books will be purchased to be used in a with Pre-K and students with disabilities in the Vineyards Elementary Media Center. These materials will be available to be used not only in this year, but in the years to come as well.
