Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 900

Matisse once said that “creativity takes courage”.  The Vineyards Elementary Media Center offers students the opportunity to explore their creativity in a safe and nurturing environment.

Our goal for the 2019-2020 school year was to provide a space for students to explore their creative side, a Makerspace.  This is a space designed for students to explore Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics in conjunction with corresponding literature. Over nine hundred students had access to these materials on a daily basis.

In order to bring the arts into our STEAM program, we opted to combine Origami and Haikus. Students were introduced to this form of poetry and tried their hand a writing their own following the structure of this form of poetry.  After, they worked in small groups to fold paper into a piece of art to go with their poem.

These creations are set to go on display in our Media Center for all to see.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Our goal is to pose a problem to the students and allow them to devise an innovative solution.

What will be done with my students

Our students will be provided with selections of poetry based on pieces of art. The students will be able to create elements of the artwork by creating their own original origami pieces.

Benefits to my students

Our students will be able to make meaningful connections between Mathematics, Art and Literacy. This initiative supports Language Arts Florida Standards (LAFS) Anchor Standard 10 that states that students will “read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts independently and proficiently.”

Budget Narrative

A collection of children’s books along with a large variety of origami paper will be purchased to be used in a “Makerspace” in the Vineyards Elementary Media Center. These materials will be available to be used not only in this year, but in the years to come as well.
