Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 205

The Osmo Coding Jam was such a hit! In the short time I was able to use the program I watched students of all levels collaborate together to code music, dance and laugh until they couldnt breathe!

The materials arrived just in time to be a welcome addition to the annual world wide Hour of Code event.

Unfortunately, I did not get to use the coding materials to the extent that I had wanted this year, but I am looking forward to having these tools available next year also when our school converts to a K-5 campus.  It will be exciting to see the fun younger students will have learning to code also.

*I apologize for not having photos but the school year was cut short unexpectedly and the photos  are saved on my school computer.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to provide exciting and motivational opportunities for my special needs students to be introduced to computer science and learn computer coding.

What will be done with my students

Student will have access to the Ipad and OSMO coding system each school day, including during the morning H.E.L.P club and Lunch Bunch.

They will use problem solving and cooperative learning to learn basic computer science and computer coding skills.

The coded programs they create can be shared via the internet with their family, classroom teacher and peers.

The following standards will be met by the activities:
SC.35.CS-CS.2.4
Solve real-world problems in science and engineering using computational thinking skills
SC.35.CS-PC.2.1
Explain how computers and computing devices are used to communicate with others on a daily basis.
SC.35.CS-CS.1.2
Describe how models and simulations can be used to solve real-world issues in science and engineering.
SC.35.CS-CS.2.2
Describe how computational thinking can be used to solve real life issues in science and engineering.

Benefits to my students

Coding builds confidence in a student's ability to learn and create, as well as the pride gained from actually creating something, as opposed to other types of learning, which can cause confusion and frustration in learning disabled students. This builds overall confidence.

Computer Science is one of the fastest growing industries, however most schools do not teach these skills on a regular basis. Currently only 8% of graduates are in the Computer Science field.

These activities will give our special needs students real world skills. It interests them, and makes them more willing and likely to socialize, building the important skill of teamwork and socialization, often lacking in the learning disabled student population.

Budget Narrative

This grant will cover the ipad and coding set along with a protective case that can be used year after year with and endless number of students. The Airwatch is required by the district in order to control and filter content while using the ipad on school grounds.
