Glenn Church - $244.00
To provide students at Golden Terrace Elementary, a Title 1 school, with an opportunity to write and publish a monthly school newspaper, The Toucan Times.
Students will be engaging in all of the aspects of journalism. They will brainstorm topics, interview students and staff, conduct research, and take their writing piece through the writing process. The process includes planning, drafting, revising, editing and publishing. With guidance from teacher volunteers, students will be actively engaged in problem solving, decision making and collaboration with their peers.
Students will gain real world experience in creating a newspaper. They will develop their writing skills and discover another purpose for writing.
Due to the fact that students are given control of much of the decision making, they will develop a sense of ownership and accomplishment that will invariably increase their sense of self worth.
Makemynewspaper.com is an online resource students use to format the final product (newspaper). The legal size paper will be used to make copies for each student in grades 3-5. The lanyards ad cord stock are used to create press passes for the students who will be part of the Toucan Times newspaper staff.
