Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 90

Approximately 90 students, in their sophomore through senior years, were able to learn hands only CPR and proper AED pad placement in the event of a cardiac emergency.  The manikins allowed me to place them in different emergency positions throughout the classroom and students had to work together in groups to save the victim.  This including checking the scene for safety, designating someone to gather the information and call 911, designating someone to go and retreive the AED, and applying the AED pads, and beginning chest compressions.  The manikins were interactive and the students LOVED IT!  They lit up RED if the students' chest compressions were too slow, and lit up YELLOW if their compressions were too fast.  GREEN meant that the students were on the correct pace.

The students truly enjoyed this hands-on learning opportunity!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To allow for hands-on learning of critical life-saving skills and first aid techniques that are required knowledge for my criminal justice students. These techniques might allow my students to one day save a life in the community!

What will be done with my students

Students will use these manikins to learn proper hand placements and locations of arteries to check for pulse. They will be able to practice actual CPR chest compression and learn how deep those compressions must go to circulate the blood throughout the body. Students will also be able to practice using the AED and applying the pads to the manikin and hear the voice prompts the machine will give during a medical emergency.

Benefits to my students

This equipment will allow students to gain valuable knowledge that may help save lives. Student will also be exposed to first responder careers that utilize these techniques on a daily basis. These students may begin to pursue a career in a medical field, as an EMT or fire fighter, or law enforcement field.

Budget Narrative

One set will allow me to instruct all of my students in my criminal justice operations courses.
