Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 16

My grant was for the program Raz-kids.  It is a program that allows students to work at their own pace on books at their level.  The program reads the book to them, then has them read the book and finally asks them questions about the book (questions and answer choices are also read to the student if needed).  I work at a title one school teaching kindergarten here in Naples.  In March when I tested my 16 students, I had  1 student below grade level, 2 students on grade level and 13 were reading above grade level!  Now that we are doing school virtually, this program has been an AMAZING resource to keep my kids reading and practicing their comprehension skills! It can be used on any device and has a free app or the students can log right on with a computer.  I am also able to go in and look at reports to see how my students are progressing!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To provide kindergarten students with fun and engaging computer based programs focusing on reading/comprehension for individual student levels and sight words.

What will be done with my students

Today, Kindergarten students are required to both read and spell their sight words. In order to truly learn these new skills students need independent practice. For my kindergarten students, this independent practice takes place during our Daily Five center rotations. During this block of time, my students will be able to review and master these skills by using the computer based technology of Samson's Classroom and Raz-Kids. This technology will provide students with a variety of different experiences throughout the program to learn to both read and spell sight words. They will then be able to take their new sight words they are learning and apply them when reading stories in Raz-Kids. Raz-Kids is a great follow up, because the program first reads the story to the student, then the student will read the story and finally they will have to answer questions about the story they have read.

Benefits to my students

While in Daily Five center rotations, kindergarten students will need to be actively engaged in a small group setting, including independent computer based learning. This program will highly benefit our ELL (second language learners large majority of students) student population with its engaging reinforcement of sight word practice, using the spelling component that will help students with their writing, and reading instruction which will improve their comprehension. All of these skills are taught in the regular classroom setting and Samson's Classroom and Raz-Kids will provide them with positive reinforcement of what was taught.

Budget Narrative

Both of these programs allow for a full 1 year license. Students will be able to access the programs from home and even during the summer. Raz-Kids also has a free app allowing access on all devices.
