Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 1600

Only about 6-8 students in the Chem Club made candles with me after school this year before the quarantine.  This was an activity that I had planned to do after Spring Break.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Students will learn the chemical structure, calculate the % composition of soy wax candles, and measure the melting point while graphing a cooling curve for the soy wax candle that they create as a memento to take home to their families.

What will be done with my students

Students will watch a short video on how to make safe burning soy candles.

They will then make safe burning soy wax candles after studying the chemical composition and calculating the % composition of our soy wax.

Students will also plot the graph of the cooling curve for the soy wax while studying phase changes.

Benefits to my students

Students will learn about clean burning soy wax candles and calculate the % composition of the wax before making the candles. They will witness phase changes which are physical changes while melting and hardening the wax. Students will also measure temperatures and time and graph the cooling curve of soy wax in addition to having a personally made and functional craft to take home as a gift for the holidays.

Budget Narrative

We already have most of the materials to perform this lab experiment such as soy wax, hot plates, thermometers, wicks, and some wick bars (which hold the candle wicks in place), pouring pitchers and warning labels. However, we need to purchase 8 oz tins and more dye chips for about $150 plus $10 for tax and $35 for shipping.

Items

# Item Cost
1 soy wax $0.00
2 clean burning wicks $0.00
3 dye chips $15.00
4 wick bars $20.00
5 wick stickers $0.00
6 4 pouring pictures $0.00
7 warning labels $0.00
8 120 - 8 oz tins $120.00
9 hot plates $0.00
10 Infared thermometers $0.00
11 votive glass holders $0.00
12 tax $10.00
13 shipping $35.00
  Total: $200.00
