Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 28

The students in my Leader in Me club, Companion Club, were so excited to reach other children in the community through the Fleece for Friends project. The amazing amount of sympathy, and for some empathy, for children in need was heartwarming. This project was funded shortly before spring break. I was able to order supplies, but leadership clubs didn't have a scheduled meeting until after spring break. As you know, students and staff never returned to campus from spring break. Golden Terrace will continue it's Leader in Me journey next year. Leadership clubs will start near the beginning of the school year. Additionally, Golden Terrace is splitting into two schools. I know students will feel an increased sense of normal and belonging when they are able to return and complete a familiar project to serve others.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of the Companion Club at GTE is to demonstrate the leadership qualities we have learned through service. We are a student-driven club. Students selected this club in order to complete craft-based service projects to show people they are not alone. This is part of the Leader in Me initiative at Golden Terrace Elementary.

What will be done with my students

My students will learn how to create a no-sew fleece blanket. Each child will need 2 yards of fleece fabric. This blanket will be gifted to a child in foster care, a group home, or identified as homeless. They will write a note to accompany the gift in order to show a child going through a difficult time that they are not alone.

Benefits to my students

My students will learn a new craft skill but more importantly they experience the impact of giving back. They will learn the purpose and necessity of service in the local community. Students will be given the opportunity to impact the lives of others in a positive way.

Budget Narrative

The prices for yards of fleece ranged from 8.99 per yard to 10.99 for 3 yards (on sale). I calculated an average of about $8 per yard using a few prices on JoAnn's website. We need a total of 64 yards. 60 yards will give 30 students each 2 yards. The remaining 4 yards will be available to the club leaders to demonstrate with as well as provide back up fabric! Any extra funds would be used towards fabric scissors.
