Imagine giving an entire school population the opportunity to learn through engagement and play while utilizing Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math skills. Studies show that there are many students that are not always given the chance to reach their full potential in these areas because of various reasons throughout their schooling experience. Being able to meet the needs of our diverse population would greatly benefit our 21st-century learners and steer them in the path of college and career readiness. The goal of this grant is to provide a meaningful and engaging learning environment for all of our Laurel Oak Elementary Dolphins. This grant would fund STEAM opportunities for every grade level.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 1133

STEAM opportunities that were otherwise not available were given to every grade level at LOE. The students were able to learn through engagement and play while utilizing Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math skills. Because of the varied STEAM based projects and activities, students were able to participate in exploring such activities from constructing to coding to circuits. These activities gave students fun and exciting challenges that clearly demonstrated their use of problem-solving skills collaborately. The smiles, enjoyment, creativity, and inquiry were in abundance within every grade level.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

All students will participate in exploring various STEAM based projects and activities from constructing to coding to circuits. These STEAM experiences can be leveled and varied by skill level and interests to best meet student's needs. Students will be given fun and exciting challenges that encourage them to use problem-solving skills and to apply their learned knowledge in a different way. Critical educational concepts and standards are embedded throughout ranging from social/collaborative skills, math skills, fine motor skills, creativity, kinesthetic learning, and Growth Mindset. As the Instructional Resource Teacher and Building Technology Coordinator, I will ensure that these products are used with integrity and grit.

Benefits to my students

By being able to reach every student in the school, the benefits of incorporating the important aspects while starting young, sets a precedent for their future. According to the U. S. Department of Commerce, STEAM occupations are growing at 17%, while other occupations are growing at 9.8%. Since STEAM education continues to spread and grow, it is our duty to expose students to these types of learning opportunities on a regular basis. Because nearly every item is reusable, students can enjoy these repeatedly and throughout the years which will help to foster curiosity and inspire innovation and real-life applications.
