The goal is to foster a love for poetry and generate excitement to publish a poetry book of their own to give as a gift to their mother (or special female relative) for Mother's Day. This has been a grant that has been funded multiple times and is always a big success, since the items are consumable it needs to be applied for yearly.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 100

We were so happy to complete this poetry unit the year after COVID since we did not complete it before going virtual for the shut down.  We are extremely thankful to Champions for Learning and Florida License for Learning for making our grant wishes come true.

This project targeted reading and writing standards, as well as, listening and speaking standards. The students took their writing through the writing process beginning with learning about different types of poetry all the way through publishing their original poems into a hardbound book for their mom's as a gift. Our free and reduced lunch population hovers around 75% so this gave the students that otherwise couldn't afford a gift something to give their mom's that they will cherish for years to come.  After publishing and wrapping their books, we practiced reading their poetry aloud.  We worked on volume, pace, and eye contact.  We also worked on introducing ourselves and thanking our audience.  This helped prepare our kids to be comfortable with public speaking.
Unfortunately, due to the restrictions in the aftermath of COVID, we could not hold our poetry cafe with parents as we had in past years, however we were able to share our poems with our individual classrooms and still provide the students with a gift for their mothers.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal is to foster a love for poetry and generate excitement to publish a poetry book of their own to give as a gift to their mother (or special female relative) for Mother's Day. This has been a grant that has been funded multiple times and is always a big success, since the items are consumable it needs to be applied for yearly.

What will be done with my students

Students will receive instruction in the different types of poetry in our Spring Poetry Unit and then will be given the opportunity to write, edit, and publish their poems in a hardback book that they can illustrate and give it to their mother (or special female relative) for Mother's Day. Students also have an opportunity to read poems that they have written at a poetry cafe. We invite families to join us for this poetry cafe and provide refreshments.

Benefits to my students

The benefits of allowing students to learn, write, edit, publish, and illustrate their poetry is that they take ownership in the final product. They are engaged and invested because it is a gift for a loved one. Taking them through the writing process and allowing them to create a finished product allows the students to to process their knowledge about poetry in a way they will remember. It gives them ownership and pride. I have asked for enough books that our entire third grade at Poinciana will be able to participate and benefit. This activity is excellent because it can easily be differentiated for English Language Learners and our ESE students.
