Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 19

The project was a huge success with my students. After reciving the book, they were so excited to get to choose the person they wanted to complete their research on. We spent a few week reading and taking notes. Students got comfy and cozied up with a great Who was book. After they had the information they needed, we were able to write as if we were that person. We continued through the writing process until, it was time to publish. Students were able to type up their biographies on the computers. After, came the creative part. Students were able to use the contruction paper to create a hanger person of their historical figure. The students loved getting to take what they learned and use it to be creative. This was also the part where students were able to help one another. They were able to ask questions about their project to their peers, and help when needed. I saw amazing coloaboration, and excitment between the students. Students were finally able to make their character come to life using an app. It allows them to speak their biogrpahy, and make it look like their hanger person was actually talking. The students loved getting to share their end projects. I saw so much ownership in their work, and excitment to be able to share about their own historical figure.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To engage students in the writing process and use their creativity to bring a historical figure to life.

What will be done with my students

Using The Who Was/Is books, students will find an inspiring person in history to write a biography on. After the students read about the person of their choice, they will be motivated to write about them. The students will write the biography in 1st person, as if they are the historical figure. Once their writing has been taken through the writing process, the students will use their creativity to make a hanger person of their historical figure. To wrap up the project, students will use technology to record themselves saying their report. Finally, they will create a QR code of their recording to be attached to their hanger person, bringing their historical figure to life.

Benefits to my students

The cluster of students I have are in the Cambridge program. These students benefit from learning experiences and choice. The students get both of these with this writing activity. They will gain knowledge on a historical figure, as well as how to write a report in 1st person.

Budget Narrative

The budget includes a selection of Who Is/Was books for student choice. It also includes the materials they will need to create their hanger person.
