Students in grade 4 & 5 (approximately 220 students) will learn about the traditional Indian art form of Rangoli. Throughout the year students in my art program learn about the beautiful and rich world of multicultural art. They then create works of art that helps them better understand the cultures’ art and traditions. Students are better able to learn about the traditions, ideas and reasons why different cultures create art, which is an important part of art appreciation. As an extension to creating a design in the likes of the Rangoli, they will then be hung on display in the Media Center where students and their peers can view their masterpieces!

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 220

Due to the generosity of the donors, 220 students at Corkscrew Elementary School were able to create a beautiful art piece.  These fourth and fifth graders were also able to learn about a new culture and to view art that is made in another part of the world.  They really enjoyed and gained an appreciation for the Indian culture by watching these artists create elaborate artworks for celebrations in India.  My students were then able to explore and create art using new materials that we would not otherwise have had the opportunity to use because of the generous donation.  Finally, my students will gain a sense of pride once I am able to hang their finished art pieces in the Media Center.  They are very excited to know that their art will decorate the Media Center and be there for other students and teachers to view.  Thank you again to the donors of Champions for Learning for helping keep art alive at CES!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Students in grade 4 & 5 (approximately 220 students) will learn about the traditional Indian art form of Rangoli. Throughout the year students in my art program learn about the beautiful and rich world of multicultural art. They then create works of art that helps them better understand the cultures’ art and traditions. Students are better able to learn about the traditions, ideas and reasons why different cultures create art, which is an important part of art appreciation. As an extension to creating a design in the likes of the Rangoli, they will then be hung on display in the Media Center where students and their peers can view their masterpieces!

What will be done with my students

Students will learn about the Indian tradition of creating Rangoli. They will learn about the group who creates the Rangoli, where they create them as well as why they create them at their doorsteps.
Students will view traditional Indian Rangoli and use these as inspiration when creating their own art work. We will also discuss the Principle of Art- Balance, which they will be using to create this work of art.
They will then start to create a design on the back of a paper plate using a pencil. Once this is done, they will use fabric paints to trace the lines that they have drawn in pencil.
Once the fabric paint is dry, students will then use the tempera paints to fill in the areas inside of the fabric paint lines.
Last once they are finished, the designs will be hung in the media center on a display system that can be attached to the ceiling tiles without damage.

Benefits to my students

My students will benefit from this project because they will gain in-depth knowledge and appreciation for a culture they may possibly never learn about. They will also gain a respect for the amount of time and artistry that goes into creating these pieces.
Also, my students here at Corkscrew Elementary are learning about becoming leaders in our school as a part of a wonderful new program, The Leader in Me. An important part of this program is knowing that they have a big part in the culture and beauty of the school. Having the chance to display their artworks in a public area for everyone to see will help them gain a sense of pride in the fact that their artwork makes the school a more beautiful place.

Budget Narrative

The budget for this project covers the cost of materials that go beyond my school supply budget. I want to provide the opportunity for my 220 fourth and 5th graders to be able to create this memorable project.
