My goal is to provide the kindergarten team with hands-on materials to support our math resources and to help meet our kindergarten math standards of number sense and geometry. These materials will allow students to build and create numbers and geometric shapes, therefore cementing these concepts. These materials cover several learning standards in our math curriculum.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 34

The materials were used to create math centers. The student rotated to the centers to experience all the different materials. The students loved using the materials to explore place value, counting, adding, and subtracting. I was able to work with a small group at a time as the other students had engaging materials to support our learning standards.

These materials provided student engagement. The dry erase boards encouraged students to show their thinking as they solve math problems. The students connected the visualization of the number to the anchor number 10 within the ten-frame structure. When the students build and create a number or geometric shape they had a better understanding of the concepts rather than just doing worksheets. The addition of these materials expanded student experience and allowed them to actually engage with the concepts in a real way. The students were very excited and their performance improved.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to provide the kindergarten team with hands-on materials to support our math resources and to help meet our kindergarten math standards of number sense and geometry. These materials will allow students to build and create numbers and geometric shapes, therefore cementing these concepts. These materials cover several learning standards in our math curriculum.

What will be done with my students

The materials will be used to create math centers. The student will rotate to the centers to experience all the different materials. These centers can be shared amongst the seven kindergarten teachers as we develop lesson plans and centers to meet our math standards. Students love hands-on centers and it gives usas the teachers the opportunity to rotate around and see student create learning and develop concepts.

Benefits to my students

These material provide student engagement. The dry erase boards features a number path—one side to 10 and the other to 20—an area to draw a picture of the problem, one or two ten frames for visualization, boxes for writing the equation, and a box to write the answer. These boards encourage students to show their thinking as they solve math problems—a useful way for us to spot and address gaps in their understanding. The Two-sided foam counters help students develop number concepts and learn basic facts to ten. They help students connect the visualization of the number to the anchor number 10 within the ten-frame structure. The shapes and bloxs kits also help students use hands-on materials to visualize and develop number sense and spatial awareness. By having students build and create a number or geometric shape they have a better understanding of the concepts rather than just doing worksheets.

Budget Narrative

The materials are reusable and shared amongst 7 teachers so they will last for many years and support several important math concepts.
