Impact to My Classroom

“When are we going to use the pens again?” 6th period student (almost every day)

Using the laptops in class was sometimes exciting and other times annoying before our Stylus pens appeared. Luckily working with our IT friends, we were able to get a deal on a different brand of surface pen so we could purchase twice as many as originally planned. Six students could be working on devices, highlighting text, clicking with a touch, and drawing in their online notebook. Student engagement and purposeful use of technology soared because of the easy use. The online notebooking station in class became very popular with many students wanting the opportunity to show their learning being tech savvy with the new Microsoft Surface enabled pens.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To replace our computer mice with Surface Pro Digital Pens that will allow all students the ability to show their learning through technology in a user friendly way no matter their current ability level.

What will be done with my students

With the requested tech accessories students will be able to use the pen to draw responses, write notes, and translate information through our class set of Microsoft Surface Pro laptops/tablets. Use of these smart pens allows students to show their learning through projects instead of just multiple choice tests. Currently our laptop mice are difficult for students to use for writing and drawing. This way I can offer them activity choices based on their interests for each unit and project.

Benefits to my students

I currently teach General, Advanced, And Cambridge 8th grade physical science where my students come from all different walks of life with one common thread; they love technology. Even the most reluctant student loves to use the devices in class to complete assignments. Several of my students are learning English for the first time and they are more comfortable using the technology instead of speaking. With the addition of the pen accessories students will be able to use the full functionality of our class devices and I will be able to provide them with more real world project based work.

Budget Narrative

The total budget for the grant goes toward purchasing the compatible pens for the CCPS wireless and devices that are already in our classroom. Shipping is free for these items.
