Part of teaching kids is realizing that not everyone learns in the same way or needs the same thing. Some students may be able to sit at their desks for a few hours and stay focused. Others, however, need the opportunity to get up, stretch, hop, skip and jump. As we begin the new school year with a new class of Kindergarten students, many who are experiencing the school environment for the first time, we notice more students who need that movement. The goal of this project is to provide an opportunity to move and then return to class refreshed, refocused and ready to learn.

Sadly, due to the closure of schools, we wer not able to fully implement this grant.

We, did however, meet as a team including the Kindergarten teachers, the School Counselors, the Psychologist and the Occupational Therapist, to discuss and deliberate the skills we wanted to address with the sensory path that we were going to order. Through this deliberation we agreed on a sensory path to order for our Kindergarten hallway. We received the path and we were in the process of preparing the hallway for installation.

We look forward to the start of school and the installation of our sensory path. I think that it will be a wonderful bright and inviting hallway as we welcome our new kindergarteners and our other students back to school.

I look forward to sharing pictures and updating this narrative, andI am so excited to see the benefits for our students.

Thank you so much for your generosity and support!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Part of teaching kids is realizing that not everyone learns in the same way or needs the same thing. Some students may be able to sit at their desks for a few hours and stay focused. Others, however, need the opportunity to get up, stretch, hop, skip and jump. As we begin the new school year with a new class of Kindergarten students, many who are experiencing the school environment for the first time, we notice more students who need that movement. The goal of this project is to provide an opportunity to move and then return to class refreshed, refocused and ready to learn.

What will be done with my students

A sensory path will be created in the Kindergarten hallway. It will give students the opportunity to use their muscles, their breathing and spatial awareness to focus on the path, research has shown that students will then return to the classroom more focused and ready to learn. The path will also provide students with the opportunity to learn academic skills as they move as it incorporates the alphabet, words, numbers and counting.

Benefits to my students

"Less than a month after these sensory hallways were unveiled, educators say that the small steps have brought about big results", reported educators in the Suffern Central school district. The fidgety students are usually the students who tend to get in trouble a bit more, and miss academic instruction, the sensory hallway is a proactive way to help these students be successful in the classroom setting. However, the benefits will extend to include all students, while creating a fun and happy school environment.
