Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 72

I can not begin to thank Perna Rose Foundation enough for choosing to fill this grant.  72 students in 5th grade at my school were able to get Multiplicaiton Flash cards to take home and practice.  Ideally students learn to master multiplicaiton in 3rd and 4th, but historically at our school we have seen that students still struggle in 5th grade.   This year with the multiplicaiton flash cards we saw students practicing their facts together in collaborative structures, testing each other in the hallways, and demonstrating quicker fact recall when applying multiplication skills in class.  These cards have set a foudnation for success for these students as mutliplication is a skill they will use frequently in other areas of math and life.

I do want to apologize for the lack of pictures, I was unable to access them from home during remote learning.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this grant is to help those 5th grade students learn their multiplication facts necessary to be successful in elementary math. This will better prepare them for middle school and beyond if they can learn their multiplication facts.

What will be done with my students

Students will have a focused set of cards available at arrival time and to borrow and take home. These focused sets will target the facts they do not know in small chunks. During arrival time they will work with a peer tutor to practice and quiz each other on their facts. If parents or students wish to borrow a set to take home they will be allowed to. Students will be checked on their facts regularly and their cards will be changed out as they become more proficient.

Benefits to my students

Students who are still struggling to learning their multiplication facts in 5th grade will continue to struggle in math in middle school. If students have access to multiplication cards to practice during arrival time with a peer tutor or at home with a parent they will be provided the opportunity to become better at multiplication which will impact their ability to solve for area, volume, complete long division, work with fractions, etc.

Budget Narrative

The funds will be used to purchase multiplications cards. Each 5th grade math teacher will be given 24 sets of cards to use with their 2 blocks of math that they each teach.
