I would like to be able to provide my students with a relevant and engaging resource that exposes them to current events and global issues in a manner that is both age-appropriate and curriculum-based. To do this, I would appreciate an annual subscription to two of Scholastic’s monthly publications.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 100

These magazines subscriptions have been amazing for supplementing classroom instruction (and now helping to deliver instruction)!  The current event articles have integrated seamlessly among current event discussions and topics of study.  My students have been presented important issues in a student-friendly and digestible way, and they have been able to participate in shared perspectives that they might not have otherwise been exposed to.  I have also been able to pull grade-level narratives and essays from the language arts geared magazines and use the monthly poetry as mentor texts for study, analysis, and mimicking—allowing my students to reach all levels of taxonomy in a single lesson!

One of the best things about having this resource was being able to share it with other instructors and reaching even more students that initially intended!  Many of the current events articles tied nicely to units of study in Civics, and were offered as a wonderful extension activity to some 7th grade students.

Though I have not been able to use the physical magazines as originally intended, the subscription has still been invaluable and instrumental in providing my students with relevant and relatable content to continue working on the standards at home through Virtual School.  I am so grateful to have been afforded this resource, and I look forward to using it next school year as well.

I wish I had had the chance to take more updated pictures of my students utilizing this resource, but have instead included how the accessible articles have migrated to Virtual School.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

I would like to be able to provide my students with a relevant and engaging resource that exposes them to current events and global issues in a manner that is both age-appropriate and curriculum-based. To do this, I would appreciate an annual subscription to two of Scholastic’s monthly publications.

What will be done with my students

With a subscription for the school year, my students will have access to both the magazine Scope and news magazine Upfront by Scholastic. Not only will students be able to interact with the publications in print, but they will also have access to lesson extensions and related activities online. Since I teach both language arts and Global Perspectives (high school elective course) to my students, these resources will provide them impactful extension activities that will meet our current standards in language arts (in reading and writing) as well as offer guided opportunities for enquiry into global issues. These monthly publications will be utilized through purposeful lesson planning that aims to meet desired goals for active standards and makes thematic connections to current works of study.

Benefits to my students

By introducing these valuable resources to my students, I can ensure that they will be able to think more critically about some of the news they are exposed to each day. Over time, they will form a better relationship with current events and global issues and become more confident when it comes to working with global or controversial issues and formulating claims with evidence. These publications will enhance the learning experience with engaging texts of multiple genres (such as non-fiction, narrative non-fiction, drama, original fiction) and thought-provoking discussion. They will even allow for cross-curricular partnerships as aligning topics to other areas of study will be simple with the wide-range of texts that my students will have access to through these subscriptions.

Budget Narrative

The requested funds would be used to subscribe to a class set (25) of each of the two publications. Each subscription includes eight monthly issues and unlimited access to digital resources. (It might even be possible to receive a 20% discount on the subscription cost, but that would be determined at purchase.) Since the bulk of these resources is tangible, it also worth noting that they can potentially be shared and/or reused beyond the original 60 students.
