Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 760

Little books have become part of our resource library and available to all students K-5 who may need to strengthen literacy skills particularly in the area of phonics.  Teachers check out books according to the skills being taught in the classroom to provide scaffolded instruction during guided reading or reading interventions.  The language rich activities that the books provide allow students struggling in decoding to strengthen their skills so that they can focus on developing their reading comprehension skills.  Fluent reading skills have become the building blocks for infusing newly acquired vocabulary into students oral and written conversations.

In addition, these books have give students many opportunites to join letter sounds to build words through word sort activities, close passages and writing tasks to ensure mastery of skills.  Through a hands-on learning approproach, students phonological awareness and phonics skills have increased.  By exploring text in real world contexts, students' comprehension of the language and spelling of words in connected texts have greatly improved.

From the engaged looks on the faces of our students, introducing them to little books  has been monumental in allowing them to grow as readers and reading their fullest potential each day.  Thank you for making it possible to spread literacy to those who benefit most from your generosity.  By incorporating these little books into instruction we have instilled the importance of reading and writing, one building block at a time!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To allow students to reinforce concepts learned as they progress through the Reading Horizons system. These books align with critical grade level standards and serve to expand children's background knowledge and vocabulary, stimulate creativity and curiosity, familiarize them with new concepts, and build fluency. The spelling supplement engages students in daily, explicit spelling instruction and assessments to complement the decoding focus of the Reading Horizons Discovery Reading program.

What will be done with my students

The language patterns and content being read offer rich opportunities for interactions about the text through questioning and discussion during and after the story. As students encounter these little books during daily guided reading instruction, they are exposed to controlled vocabulary words that embody the skills that are being taught in the classroom. Teachers target specific phonetic skills, while students engage in rereading of the text and in identifying these patterns during reading. In turn, they develop decoding strategies that provide the building blocks for reading and writing success.

Students complete a pre- and post- spelling assessment.
As an extension activity, students engage in word study opportunities with their peers. By discussing word patterns, students learn to generate new words and become even better spellers. They engage in word sorts, cloze passages, a writing prompt, and homework pages for each lesson. At the end of a six weeks of spelling instruction, a cumulative assessment is completed to ensure mastery of skills.

Benefits to my students

It is important that early reading books are matched to the students' stages of reading proficiency. Decodable and leveled books ensure that emergent readers have the opportunity to build a solid reading foundation with confidence. As they encounter more challenging words on their reading adventure, they will progress from early reading books to exploring the vast world of print.

Word learning acquisition by hearing words repeatedly in a familiar context, helps students retain new vocabulary to a greater extent. Research has shown that students who focus their attention on print will have better literacy outcomes than those who do not. Reading and spelling gains are attained by students when they are taught to connect reading tasks to written expression.
