Thank you to the following investor for funding this grant.
Schoen Charitable Foundation - $374.46
Students in an inclusive setting or in a self-contained ESE class who have limited dexterity, difficulty remembering combinations, or visual impairments can struggle to open traditional master locks provided for middle school locker use. This could limit their ability to be prepared and on time for their classes. The goal is to have a supply of various locks for trial and use that meet students' differing abilities and needs.
Students who are reported to struggle with lock use or who accumulate classroom tardies due to difficulty opening their locker will have an opportunity to trial a lock with a simpler number combination, a word combination, a directional combination, and/or a push key opener to find a type to use that helps them be successful. The students will be allowed to use the same lock throughout the three years of middle school.
Students will not miss out on instructional time. They will spend less time managing their materials at designated locker use time. They will benefit from using a locker like other students who do not have dexterity, memory or vision issues. They will feel successful with this middle school skill of opening and using a locker within a specified time. This will prepare them for high school locker use. The locks can be re-used each year.
