Students will each create a painting chosen from a variety of Florida endangered species using watercolors to bring to life the exquisite beauty and textures of the species they select. They will then write an artist statement as to which environmental benefit the species provides that inspired them to create their painting.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 180

With the incredibly generous grant to fund "Color My World", my art classroom was stocked with high quality, refillable Faeber Castell watercolor trays, brushes and student grade watercolor paper.

Students were overjoyed to unpack the gifts and go to work experimenting and expoloring the world of color. But more importantly, they connected to our community and environmental awareness through creative self expression.

These students beautifully painted portraits of endangered species as well as researched and expressed the animal's contribution to ecosystem sustainability.

It is so important that students are given creative materials to manipulate and master. With a variety of tools and materials students are able to broaden they're creative and critical thinking skills as they pertain to positive problem solving applications and impactful ways to express problems and/or issues. As a result, my classes were able to creatively and effectively express their feelings and facts to a large population through community exhibitions and social media platforms.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Students will each create a painting chosen from a variety of Florida endangered species using watercolors to bring to life the exquisite beauty and textures of the species they select. They will then write an artist statement as to which environmental benefit the species provides that inspired them to create their painting.

What will be done with my students

Students will research Florida endangered species using books and technology to understand the important role they play in our environment and to observe and appreciate the unique aesthetic qualities of these creatures.
Students will use observational drawing techniques to replicate an inspirational image.
Finally, they will use watercolor paints and techniques to replicate the colors, value, patterns and textures that make the animal unique.

Benefits to my students

Students will benefit from the purposeful connection to an environmental cause while experimenting with the process of watercolor techniques.
Students will definitely benefit from a user friendly watercolor product such as the Faber-Castell connector pallets. They allow the artist to select each individual oversized color pan specific to the colors of their painting and connect them to create a custom pallet. Our current watercolor pallets are quite small, worn and depleted.
