We would like to take 150 10th graders to the Southwest Florida Military Museum and Library to see artifacts and history exhibits from the Civil War, Revolutionary War, World War I and II and Vietnam War. The students will interview veterans and are raising money as a donation to SW Florida Vets and the Museum. The field trip is approved by Principal Jeff Rexford, but transportation must be paid for. The buses will cost approx. $500. I am requesting $350 from our School Advisory Council, but will not know the results until Oct. 15.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 130

One hundred and thirty 10th grade students from Lorenzo Walker Techical High School were able to go on a field trip to the Southwest Florida Military Museum on Friday, November 15.  The goal of the trip was to learn about the history of various wars and to pay tribute to veterans during Veterans Week.   The students toured the museum in small groups under the direction of veteran volunteers who explained the many artifacts.  Students stayed in small groups and spent time during lunch with about 8 veterans from many wars around the world.  They also received presentations on the history of women in the military; purple hearts and the Iraq war.

Students also gave back to the veterans by selling donuts on site at school and raising $350 dollars which was donated  to the museum as a gesture of appreciation for the good work they do to support the veterans of southwest Florida.

A post field trip survey of students was done to get feedback, which was overwhelmingly positive.  This was compiled with pictures into an online site which is linked here.  The only negative was that students wanted the field trip to be longer. It was 2 hours plus travel time.

Thank you Susan Healy and Champions for Learning for making this trip a reality.

Here is the web site link showing videos, photos and post-field trip survey results.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

We would like to take 150 10th graders to the Southwest Florida Military Museum and Library to see artifacts and history exhibits from the Civil War, Revolutionary War, World War I and II and Vietnam War. The students will interview veterans and are raising money as a donation to SW Florida Vets and the Museum. The field trip is approved by Principal Jeff Rexford, but transportation must be paid for. The buses will cost approx. $500. I am requesting $350 from our School Advisory Council, but will not know the results until Oct. 15.

What will be done with my students

All 10th graders from the school will tour the museum students and explore each of the war related exhibits. They will uncover the history and major historical artifacts with guiding tours and materials. They will also visit with veterans while eating lunch and interview them as to their experiences during their respective wars. It is also the goal to raise money for the museum and present this to the director during our visit. The funds will go to the museum and the need of veterans of southwest Florida.

Benefits to my students

This trip combines multiple learning goals including learning about the causes and effects of the Civil War, WWI, WWII and other major conflicts, as well as teaching the character traits of respect and patriotism.

It is significant for our students to go beyond the classroom to see and experience first hand the retelling of experiences of veterans and to see the artifacts of major wars up close.

Budget Narrative

I was told the buses will cost approximately $500 and charge $26 per hour. The total trip is two hours of travel and three hours at the museum. Number of buses needed 4-5. Lunch is provided.

I am requesting $350 from our School Advisory Committee Oct. 15, so would request $150 as a classroom grant from Champions for Learning. If my request to the SAC is declined, I will resubmit my request for the whole $500. Thank you.
