Civics is a 7th grade course that is difficult for many. The primary content for the course pertains to the principles, functions, and organization of government; the origins of the American political system; the roles, rights, and responsibilities of United States citizens; and methods of active participation in our political system. The course is embedded with strong geographic and economic components to support civic education instruction.
Students are exposed to a large amount of content in this course and it is important to provide students engaging ways to learn this content. These platforms and strategies we are looking to incorporate, will do just that; allow them to learn a lot of information in an engaging way which will make it stick. In today’s world teaching students what being a citizen is all about is very important.
The world of teaching and learning has drastically changed over the course of the last few months, yet the importance of teaching Civics continues to be paramount. This vital course demands our best efforts and we, as teachers, need the tools to provide engaging lessons for our students. The incorporation of these platforms/strategies will enable us to meet the needs of virtual as well as face-to-face teaching, making sure we are not leaving anyone behind.

What will be done with my students

These items will be used throughout the school year:

1.) Using Nearpod, the students will be able to have interaction with the information and concepts. They will be able to write, draw, match, experience virtual reality, watch pertinent videos, interact with other students and most importantly learn from these wide range of engaging activities. They can visit historical places and view documents, as though they are there. This platform allows for a one-stop-shop and we can tweak lessons that are already created to best meet the needs of our students and focus on our benchmarks. This site allows for both synchronous (live) and asynchronous (student-paced) learning. Students will have the ability to use it over and over. They can use it with the teacher or on their own.

2.) Using Quizlet (Teacher Upgrade), students will study vocabulary and concepts in an interactive manner. This site allows for pictures, key ideas, etc., to be reviewed in multiple formats like matching or drag and drop. Students learn while having fun.

3.) Using the Escape Room Bundle from Teacher Pay Teachers, students will have fun while learning and reviewing civics topics. This bundle is created with text/documents and codes. Students can work individually or collaboratively to solve the codes/puzzles. This bundle focuses on only Civics topics. It will allow the students to have some fun while reviewing/learning!

4.) Using Word Wall, the students will love reviewing. This is a game site that allows the teacher to input information (graphics, too) and create carnival style games. Students can review and learn while enjoying a little competition!

We will use these items to create activities that can be used both online and in our classrooms for lots of interaction and engagement.

Benefits to my students

Civics is a tough subject that is tested at the state level. This test is the first EOCA (End of Course Assessment) that our students take from the state. It is considered a high stakes test, meaning 30 percent of their final grade comes from this test. Our job as teachers is to make the learning come to life for all of our students. By giving them opportunities to interact with content that we build and tweak, the learning is long lasting and alive! Students need to see learning as fun and engaging. These items will allow us to create that environment and therefore help them learn this very important subject.

Budget Narrative

Each item will be purchased online. We will be creating activities for our students to use to bring this subject to life!

Each teacher respectfully requests individual accounts so we can better meet the needs of our students, regardless of whether they are face-to-face or virtual. (We are trying to cover all bases to ensure success for all!)
