James & Shelley Payer - $877.92
Our goal is to provide Lake Park's P-Awesome 2nd grade leaners with high quality relevant reading material, by obtaining a subscription to Scholastic News Magazine and Scholastic's Science Spin Magazines, which will help them improve their literacy skills, while supporting students' active engagement in authentic and innovative learning experiences for both in-person and virtual learning communities.
Our students, both in-person and virtual will each have access to Scholastic Classroom Magazines and Scholastic's Science Spin Magazines, which will help ensure that they are provided with "timely educational print and digital magazines that are packed with skill-building activities and high-interest articles they will love to read." In addition, students will be provided with "a cross-curricular approach to core subject areas in reading, math, social studies and science, as well as art, health and life skills." Not to mention that a subscription to Scholastic News Magazines will also help strengthen students' 21st century learning skills, by enabling them to engage in "a rich set of technology-based resources, including digital supports to differentiate instruction and spark lasting student interest." Students will also be provided with the opportunity to access the Scholastic News website, which features "fun videos, audio read-aloud and learning games." Furthermore, Scholastic News Magazines can be integrated into our Learning Management System, Canvas, which will help provide seamless access to high quality reading content, because it will "send students directly into the magazine website when they log into Canvas course." (Scholastic, 2020)
Scholastic Classroom Magazines and Scholastic's Science Spin Magazines are valuable tools that have many benefits for our students. The magazines "cover core subjects in an engaging age-appropriate and cross-curricular way," "helping to support instruction and encourage students to make real-world connections across disciplines." Research supports the use of Scholastic Classroom Magazines, and highlights how they "enhance learning by building students’ background knowledge, providing accessible entry points to literacy, and encouraging home-school connections and peer-to-peer interactions." (Scholastic News Magazine, 2020)
With your contribution, our 115 second grade students will obtain access to 32 issues of print and digital Scholastic News Magazines (at the price of $5.95 per child), along with access to 8 issues of print and digital Science Spin Magazines (at a price of $0.99 per child). In total, we are requesting financial support in the amount of $877.92, which includes shipping and handling, so that we can provide our students with this valuable resource that will engage them in authentic and relevant learning, while motivating them to expand their literacy skills.
