Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 115

Words cannot express how grateful we are for the support we have received with this Champions of Learning Grant. We truly appreciate all the amazing Scholastic News resources you have generously helped our team put into our learners' hands, because they help them learn about the world around them, and also encourage them to share their knowledge with others in authentic ways! Throughout the year, we have focused on how acts big and small can help change the world for the better, including a simple act of kindness toward others. Therefore, your kindness and generosity in supporting this grant inspire our 2nd-grade team and students to pay it forward, and it is amazing to see how our learners are always looking for ways that they too can help others by being kind.

By supporting our grant, the 2nd-grade team has been able to integrate rigorous and relevant nonfiction text to help provide Lake Park's 115 2nd graders with a wide range of learning engagements that empower learners to actively construct their own knowledge, along with motivating them to demonstrate their comprehension and application of knowledge in a variety of ways. Most importantly, your kindness and generosity have helped provide the 2nd-grade team with numerous tools that enable us to seamlessly differentiate our instruction to meet each of our students' diverse needs to increase student achievement. Not only does this grant enable the 2nd-grade team to gear our instruction to our students' wide range of learning styles, but it also helps us to ensure that all of our students are able to access content in meaningful ways. Furthermore, this grant has helped male LPE’s shared vision become a reality, by ensuring “Success for Every Student, Everyday!”

Thank you for investing in each of our student's education and believing in their bright future.

Sincerely,

LPE's 2nd Grade Learners and Teachers

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Our goal is to provide Lake Park's P-Awesome 2nd grade leaners with high quality relevant reading material, by obtaining a subscription to Scholastic News Magazine and Scholastic's Science Spin Magazines, which will help them improve their literacy skills, while supporting students' active engagement in authentic and innovative learning experiences for both in-person and virtual learning communities.

What will be done with my students

Our students, both in-person and virtual will each have access to Scholastic Classroom Magazines and Scholastic's Science Spin Magazines, which will help ensure that they are provided with "timely educational print and digital magazines that are packed with skill-building activities and high-interest articles they will love to read." In addition, students will be provided with "a cross-curricular approach to core subject areas in reading, math, social studies and science, as well as art, health and life skills." Not to mention that a subscription to Scholastic News Magazines will also help strengthen students' 21st century learning skills, by enabling them to engage in "a rich set of technology-based resources, including digital supports to differentiate instruction and spark lasting student interest." Students will also be provided with the opportunity to access the Scholastic News website, which features "fun videos, audio read-aloud and learning games." Furthermore, Scholastic News Magazines can be integrated into our Learning Management System, Canvas, which will help provide seamless access to high quality reading content, because it will "send students directly into the magazine website when they log into Canvas course." (Scholastic, 2020)

Benefits to my students

Scholastic Classroom Magazines and Scholastic's Science Spin Magazines are valuable tools that have many benefits for our students. The magazines "cover core subjects in an engaging age-appropriate and cross-curricular way," "helping to support instruction and encourage students to make real-world connections across disciplines." Research supports the use of Scholastic Classroom Magazines, and highlights how they "enhance learning by building students’ background knowledge, providing accessible entry points to literacy, and encouraging home-school connections and peer-to-peer interactions." (Scholastic News Magazine, 2020)
