Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 125

I wanted to create an interest in reading by bringing the latest information into the classroom for high school students to see what is taking place in the real world business, finance, and travel industries. To do this I ordered multiple magazines that have up to date information on many different business issues.   Students looked through different issues of the magazines and once the students found an interesting article they were required to write a reflective essay on the article. By doing this activity the students were interested in current events in fields that they are interested in working in the future and gave them a connection to real world happenings instead of just using textbooks. This activity provided a springboard into many interesting class discussions. Many students enjoyed reading the articles and therefore in my room I have allowed students access to any and all of the magazines so if they want to take a magazine home and read it the students are allowed that opportunity. Doing this has been a great experience for the students as well as myself, I appreciate the funding to be able to provide the students with this extra opportunity that they may not have gotten otherwise.

I also noticed that some students that were not necessarily avid readers enjoyed this because it was reading an informative magazine that they had an interest in rather than a book they may have been forced to read.

In my Business Ownership class students would read about the lastest trends and ideas that were happening in the business world and where then able to put some of what they read to use. It was refreshing to see many students take advantage of the opportunity to implement some of the techniques they read about. I am also the DECA advisor at school and noticed that many of the members would borrow a magazine or two and bring them back when they were done with it. I believe that this helped many of the students when they competed in their state competitions this year. I am hoping to utilize the magazines for the students again next year. This allowed the students that took the initiative to read and be up to date on more current events and topics.

Putting the information to use

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To create an interest in reading by bringing the latest information into the classroom for high school students to see what is taking place in the real world business and finance industries.

What will be done with my students

Students will look through different issues of technology magazines that report the most innovative advances in different areas of business and finance. Once the students have found an interesting article they will be required to write a reflective essay on the article. By doing this activity the students will keep a journal of interesting occurrences in fields that they are interested in and give them a connection to real world happening instead of just using textbooks. The students will keep a reflective journal online and questions that arise from reading the newspaper will provide a springboard for classroom discussions. With the subscriptions to different magazines the students will be able to find articles that they are interested in. The magazines will supplement classroom materials with real-life examples.

Benefits to my students

The magazine subscriptions will be used in all of my classes including entrepreneurship and will provide a means of motivating the students to think outside of their normal classroom box. With the exposure to the latest in technology students may take an interest in different fields of study that they may not have before. It will also help students gain a better knowledge of the vocabulary that we use in class because they will be reading it in print. The exposure to these real world articles will increase the students’ vocabulary and reading comprehension. The students will truly appreciate that experience.

Budget Narrative

I will get one subscription to each of the above magazines.
