Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 1960

With this money, I was able to purchase 48 different books from Scholastic for all the students I work with! I am currently a school counselor at two different schools. The total number of students at both campuses is around 1,960 students. I have the privilege of working with two other full time counselors, one at each campus. Being a first year counselor, I was able to purchase many different books with this grant. These books help students that might have different family dynamics, focus of all different emotions, and different examples on how to perform your best in school. When working with students one on one it helps to have these books as references for the students of all ages. Another benefit of being a school counselor is I am able to go in each classroom and do classroom lessons. Some lessons I have done with the books in the classroom focus of emotions or different ways to treat others. When doing the lessons the books I was able to purchase go hand and hand with all the lessons I do.

Another great thing is I have them available for teachers to come and use when needed. For examples, this year I was able to loan a book to our Deputy that was needed to push into a classroom. She was able to have a discussion with the class about having nice hands. I love being a recourse for all staff not only our students.

Thank you for the money to purchase these amazing resources for our students and staff!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to provide students and teachers with books that can help them with everyday life. By having these books in my library I am able to conduct all different kinds of lessons throughout the year.

What will be done with my students

As a new school counselor, I need to begin to build my library of books. These book topics consist of, emotions, diversity, grief, anxiety, self-control, kindness, and many more. Having these books will provide a great base for many different lessons I can conduct for Elementary students. When discussing these topics the students can connect with the books and apply those feelings or actions into their own life. The students will listen to these stories in small groups, large groups, and in the classroom setting.

Benefits to my students

Working with grades K-5 books are a universal learning and teaching tool. An item that everyone can relate to. When students are dealing with different emtions, or situations they need to be able to relate to someone or something. When a book is opened and read to a student their mind opens as well. Books give students the opportunity to start a discussion when it might be hard. Notice that they aren't alone in that situation. These books will help the student's social-emotional state as well as their knowledge on many different topics.
