As we all know reading is important and allows students to reinforce their comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency skills. Empowering students to pick books of interest and on their own individual reading levels will only set them up for success. When we are able to celebrate reading we then send a message of how fun it can be and how important it is.

The Michael J Searcy Family was kind enough to fund Brag Tags for our 2020-2021 school year. The kids are absolutely loving reading and earning reading counts points. Students are taking their own responsibility for reading and setting their own goals.

We have been able to create a culture that celebrates and values a love for reading. We are so thankful that this grant was funded!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Our goal is to encourage and motivate all children to read. We need to inspire reading success for all students.

What will be done with my students

The students will select a book from a library, classroom library, or digital online library to read on their independent reading level. Students will read the books at their own pace and then complete a short quiz to verify comprehension. Once students pass the quiz then they will earn reading counts points. The more they read the more points they earn. The students will be responsible for keeping track of their progress. When they get to certain point increments then they will get a brag tag to add onto a necklace.

Benefits to my students

Students will benefit because it will reinforce comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency skills. Reading and receiving brag tags will help students build personal responsibility toward increasing their reading achievement by allowing them to help set quantifiable reading goals and to track their own progress.
