Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 150

In the year of 2020-2021, having access to a classroom tool such as Parlay gave me the ability to conduct anonymous online discussions about personal and controversial topics. I am able to know who the students are and also to facilitate discussions by directing them to websites that are research based and not funded by interest or political groups.

Students read, watch short videos, answer questions and respond the classmates who are all assigned random historical figures names, so they never know who they are chatting with online. I am able to observe, monitor and grade and give feedback in an private setting. Kids feel safe to discuss and question without feeling as if they are will be judged by their peers based on their lack of prior knowledge or comments they make.

We were able to tackle topics such as Child Labor ( which showed up later in the year on a Cambridge AICE Global Perspectives exam), the United Nations Sustainability agenda, Media Bias, Social Media Activism, Human Rights, the use of DNA in solving crimes and the January 6 attacks on the U.S. Capitol. Parlay is a tool that I will always want to have available in my social studies classroom and I am very thankful for my former student for recognizing the value in making this available to my students and me.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To increase classroom engagement by being able to monitor student progress and participation in the classroom without having to go back and forth to my computer station. I can be much more readily available and timely in class.

What will be done with my students

I use Google Docs and Slides for presentations in the classroom and need to be able to see student progress and give feedback at their desk. With Corona Virus, I cannot place my computer on their desk. I can show them on an Ipad what they need to work on as well as mark up their papers for feedback .
I need to be able to film video presentations for my AICE Cambridge Global Perspectives students so they can see areas of strength and needs for improvement before their final exam presentations.

I also want to purchase Classroom research and discussion software called Parlay to use in round table discussions to develop research, debate and speaking skills. This will be used in my Global Perspectives, Government/ Economics and History classes.

Benefits to my students

I can run the classroom apps at the student desktop and show them by marking up their actual research papers and presentations. I can also monitor student progress in Parlay for discussion and who needs a "nudge" to participate. Games can be activated and the next questions can be started with me being mobile.

I am really looking to increase feedback and engagement in the classroom.
