My goal is to provide high-quality art and instructional materials to allow myself and my co-teacher to implement the picturing writing process with our students. Due to health reasons this year, each child will need their own set of high-quality paints. The students will create art and use these images to develop their poems and stories. We will implement a creative arts unit of combining their hand-painted watercolors with literature and poetry. The students will create books of paintings and poetry about the time of day (dawn sunrise, day, sunset, twilight and night, etc.), seasons, and weather. This unit allows the children to apply what they are learning about language skills such as alliteration, onomatopoeia, similes, metaphors, and parts of speech to create wonderful poems and stories.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 34

The high-quality art and instructional materials allowed each child to have their own set of paints The students were able to create art and use these images to develop their poems and stories. They participated in a creative arts unit of combining their hand-painted watercolors with literature and poetry. The students created books of paintings and poetry about the time about USA symbols, seasons, and weather. This unit allowed the children to apply what they learned about language skills such as alliteration, onomatopoeia, similes, metaphors, and parts of speech to create wonderful poems and stories. They learned how to create pictures that tell a story and write words that paint pictures.

By implementing the arts and literacy in which I have received training and with the supplies my students were able to access their ideas and improve their literacy skills. They applied these skills to their poetry books and then applied them to their other writing assignments.

What will be done with my students

Picturing Writing: Fostering Literacy through Art is an art-and-literature-based research-proven approach to writing developed at UNH that integrates visual modes of thinking at every stage of the writing process. Picturing Writing utilizes simple crayon resist art techniques and quality literature in a progression of mini-lessons that teach essential literacy skills to students with diverse learning styles. During Artists/Writers Workshop, students draft their ideas in images first. They learn how to create pictures that tell a story and write words that paint pictures. As students become fluent in two languages, they are able to approach writing from a position of strength according to their individual learning style. The key elements of story are taught through the dual languages of pictures and words. This language-rich visual process supports the creation of descriptive passages, poetry, personal narrative, fiction, research-based stories, and descriptive report writing. With the proper supplies. I will implement this program and the students on my team will develop both their art and writing skills and produce published pieces to share with their peers.

Benefits to my students

By implementing the arts and literacy in which I have received training my students will be able to access their ideas and improve their literacy skills. Picturing Writing within the Writing Process was validated by the US Department of Education as an "innovative and effective literacy program" in 1993. Based on our documented success, Picturing Writing and Image-Making have been selected to partner with schools receiving federal Comprehensive School reform Grants and Arts in Education Model Development and Dissemination Grants... This process is research-based and will have a high impact on my student's achievement. Students participating in Picturing Writing during the 2007-2010 school year demonstrated statistically significant gains in writing achievement and visual literacy skills as compared to students in demographically matched comparison groups.
