My goal is to provide scientifically-based identification and treatment tools for social pragmatic language disorders- otherwise known as "the hidden curriculum" of school. The "hidden curriculum" is the understanding and use of unstated rules in social/school situations. These unstated rules are critical for student success.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 1000

We were able to purchase amazing things with our grant. We purchased 7 online social pragmatic tests that can be shared with our 65 therapists in the districts. The company sent via zoom, a trainer for all of us to learn how to administer the assessment. Therapists are thrilled with the product and using it weekly.

We purchased 10 annual memberships to the Vinedo Learning squad to use in therapy. These are used on a daily basis with hundreds of students in our district to meet their IEP goals.

We purchased 4 (10$) gift cards to teacherspayteachers.com to allow our therapists to buy additional support visual materials to upplement the video skills training program.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to provide scientifically-based identification and treatment tools for social pragmatic language disorders- otherwise known as "the hidden curriculum" of school. The "hidden curriculum" is the understanding and use of unstated rules in social/school situations. These unstated rules are critical for student success.

What will be done with my students

I am a team leader for 65 speech-language pathologists that service every Collier County Public School, both in- person and virtually. Social pragmatic language disorders create a wide range of challenge for many of our students that we serve. It causes them to have trouble participating in groups, maintaining peer/adult relationships, behavioral issues in class, and difficulty navigating the every day school world. This particular impairment affects many of our high functioning students on the autism spectrum as well as several other students with exceptional challenges. We need a researched-based video modeling assessment (CAPs test) to identify/quantify and helps us establish treatment goals. Video modeling therapy is currently the "gold standard" for treating these types of disorders as students are able to experience real life situations, facial expressions, emotions, sarcasm, etc. The "added bonus" is that this is digital and can be used with both our brick and mortar students as well as our virtual caseload. The video learning series is a subscription to video models and lesson plans that we can use in therapy. These assessments and video therapy models can be used with students ages 7-21 so it is applicable to numerous students across the CCPS system.

Benefits to my students

These assessment tools (CAPs tests) and video modeling subscriptions will enable the CCPS speech-language pathologist to provide our students with the latest scientifically researched based assessments and therapy programs. By improving our students' social language skills, we will see a positive impact in both their social and academic worlds. We want to equip them with all the skills they will need to be the best students they can be!
