The goal is to provide scientifically-based identification for social pragmatic language disorders-otherwise know as "the "hidden curriculum" of school. The "hidden curriculum" is the understanding and use of unstated rules in social school situations. These unstated rules are critical to student success.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 400

Hello, I am sharing the impact and results of the grant for Video Learning Squad that was funded for Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) throughout the district. I am sorry that I cannot give an accurate number of students impacted, but I can share that I was able to share 43 yearly subscriptions with SLPs. I asked that SLPs from a few different schools share some pictures so that you may witness how it is being used in different schools. This program has been effective in providing therapy for many students with pragmatic language disorders. This subscription helps students to address an area that they have difficulty with, specifically, Theory of Mind. Theory of Mind is a term that is used to describe understanding of mental states, our own and those of others. Our students often know what they desire or enjoy and have difficulty understanding that others may differ. An effective therapy tool is to use videos to describe what they observe and help our students to recognize that other people's thoughts may be different than their own and it becomes more visible when witnessing it in a video. This is a tool used by many educators to witness ourselves or others so that we may internalize what we have viewed. Below are some pictures from Laurel Oak Elementary of a student watching a social situation and identifying what the problem is, Palmetto Ridge High School students watching a scenario where they need to identify the correct social response, and a Big Cypress Elementary student identifying basic emotions to encourage awareness in real life situations. All SLPs feel that these videos have been effective in presenting specific situations that need to be addressed and helping students to develop awareness of their own feelings and actions, as well as others.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal is to provide scientifically-based identification for social pragmatic language disorders-otherwise know as "the "hidden curriculum" of school. The "hidden curriculum" is the understanding and use of unstated rules in social school situations. These unstated rules are critical to student success.

What will be done with my students

(This application is an extension of my fellow SLP Lead Audra Moriarty's application.)I am a co-team leader to 65 Speech Language Pathologists that serve Collier County Public Schools in person and virtually. Social pragmatic language disorders create a wide range of challenge our many of the students that we serve. It causes them to have trouble participating in groups, maintaining peer/adult relationships, behavioral issues in class, and difficulty navigating the every day school world. This particular impairment affects many of our high functioning students on the autism spectrum as well as students served in the general education classroom. Video modeling therapy is currently the "gold standard" for treating these types of disorders as students are able to experience real life situations, facial expressions, emotions, sarcasm, etc. The "added bonus" is that this is digital and can be used with students served in our brick and mortar schools as well as virtually. The video learning series is a subscription to video models and lessons plans that we can use in therapy. These video therapy models can be sued with students ages 7-21 so it is applicable to many students across the CCPS system.

Benefits to my students

These video modeling therapy subscriptions will enable the CCPS Speech Language Pathologists to provide our students with the latest scientifically based research therapy programs. By improving our students' social language skills, we will see a positive impact in both their social and academic worlds. We want to equip them with all the skills they will need to be the best students they can be.

*This application is an extension of my fellow SLP Lead Audra Moriarty's application in an effort to provide SLPs with effective therapy options for students in face to face and virtual sessions. Social skills therapy has always been essential to help children who struggle to be aware and explain their stressors. As our nation endures this pandemic, the stress and anxiety is higher and can impact a student's ability to focus and learn. Through video modeling and student engagement, we hope to create structured empathetic discussions to share tips that encourage children to share their thoughts, feelings, and vulnerabilities. We would like to provide this resource to as many therapists as possible.
