Towards the end of last year Poinciana Elementary School was put on the map as a location in which students could investigate, and utilize weather tools, global radar systems and data technology. Our goal is simple to allow students to continue their strides forward as collaborators, leaders, scientists and engineers while continuing to utilize a program that was cut short due to the circumstances world wide. Our goal is to improve the students and community members understanding of how our research can impact those around us.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 544

The ability to utilize the Earthnet Weather Program along with the Global Weather System has had an important impact on our school.  Our news anchors share the daily weather along with images from our Weather Camera so that all students can begin to understand weather termonolgy as well as compare our weather with other areas.  Students across grade levels have been able to utilize the camera within their classrooms to study weather tools, predict the weather, and dive into the science behind what causes various forms of weather in different locations.  Students have also had the opportunity to share with their families our local weather link and discuss with them what the air pressure, temperature, humidity etc all mean to them and maybe their weekend plans.  It has also given the students and teachers a sense of pride knowing that we are collecting weather data on a global network and that we are contributing to a global community.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Towards the end of last year Poinciana Elementary School was put on the map as a location in which students could investigate, and utilize weather tools, global radar systems and data technology. Our goal is simple to allow students to continue their strides forward as collaborators, leaders, scientists and engineers while continuing to utilize a program that was cut short due to the circumstances world wide. Our goal is to improve the students and community members understanding of how our research can impact those around us.

What will be done with my students

Students will utilize the worldwide Science and Education Globe Program along with Earth Networks to investigate and explore the Earth's atmosphere, weather and climate. Students and community members will also further their education in science, technology, engineering and math by having the opportunity to conduct research locally as well as globally while analyzing different environments utilizing weather tools, global radar systems, data analogy and more. Students will also be able to see how their research can impact scientists globally in understanding our climate and changing weather systems.

Benefits to my students

Students will be able to connect to a network of students, teachers, and volunteers around the world to better understand, sustain and improve Earth's environment at local, regional and global levels. Students will improve mathematical, technological, observational and communication skills by utilizing the weather equipment both virtually and in person to experience a sense of community and school pride while collaborating with their peers. .
