Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 42

This year was extra special as a grant recipient. Students impacted were both virtual (see attached) and in-person as I taught ELA to two 5th grade classrooms. I have attached photos to get a gist of how teaching from an on-line platform can be engaging to all students no matter where they are learning from. Students had an opportunity to listen as I read fiction and non-fiction aloud, interact with vocabulary using vocabulary notebooks and integrated with social studies and science. If students missed class or needed to go back to the text it was provided to them in a read-aloud format as a video as well as text straight from the books. Engaging activities were provided to support reading strategies, comprehension, and enhance creativity with scavenger hunts, Prezi's and more academic motivators.

Thank you again,

Gretchen Byers0

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To foster a love of reading through evoking meaningful, engaging read aloud material to motivate students and support learning of vocabulary, figurative language, comprehension, non-fiction text connected to science and social studies.

What will be done with my students

As a virtual learning community, I will model reading as well as provide a slide show of the said text for students to refer to as needed during reading and learning also to align with state standards. Research shows when students read or listen to text, the reader or listener draws on several interactive knowledge sources to make meaning (Anderson, 1994) including comprehension strategies. Furthermore, learning is a social activity, it is important for us to allow social collaboration as a part of our instructional practice (Baker et al., 2000; Guthrie, 2004). Students are learning how to ask and answer questions based on key details of a text as well as collaborating with peers. Partners collaborate through asking and answering questions throughout the week together as we dig deeper into the text using close reading strategies.

Benefits to my students

Students will be able to:
-follow along in a virtual setting
-build content specific and academic vocabulary
-demonstrate comprehension through text-based responses
-demonstrate comprehension of non-fiction text using text features
-extend proficiency in fluency and comprehension
-foster a love of reading
