Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 400

Give students a frog and they will want to be in science! My students loved the frog dissection activity. It was grimy and a little gross but it was real! That was the most rewarding aspect of this project. Students got to learn and body systems in a real way. They saw the stomachs and intestines of these animals. They learned dissection techniques and got lab experience that will help them in future science courses. This truly was a rewarding project.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this grant is to introduce the topics on the human body systems (SC.6.L.14.5
Identify and investigate the general functions of the major systems of the human body -- digestive, respiratory, circulatory, reproductive, excretory, immune, nervous, and musculoskeletal) with a hands-on approach and engaging laboratory activity.

What will be done with my students

Students will be able to work collaboratively in groups and study 3 specimens and investigate the species' internal body systems. Students will be able to take control of the learning and exploring and become REAL scientists, studying REAL animals. They will complete a comprehensive laboratory investigation, take real data, and make their own conclusions.

Benefits to my students

Students who physically experience scientific concepts understand them more deeply and score better on science tests, according to a new UChicago-led study (Uchicago 2015). This is especially important for students who struggle in the language (ELL students).

Budget Narrative

The budget is for 18 Introductory Dissection Kits for 60 students to participate in the laboratory.
