The goal of this grant is to provide students an engaging way to interact with cells. Although cells are microscopic, this activity allows students to work with cells in a hands on way and keep their copies throughout the year to reference.

The goal of this grant is to provide students an engaging way to interact with cells. Although cells are microscopic, this activity allows students to work with cells in a hands on way and keep their copies throughout the year to reference.
When I cover the cells and cell theory topics in class, I would implement this activity. Students will be able to draw and color their own models of plant and animal cells, then watch as the cells magically shrink in an oven (with adult supervision of course). Then they get to take their cells home as key-chains or zipper pulls!
My students will be able to make connections between the concepts in the classroom and concepts in the real world and more parts of their brains are activated, and the knowledge gained more easily transfers to long-term memory. This style of teaching and learning also fosters the growth of critical thinking and problem solving skills. Students also love to create things and this is the perfect activity for students who love to be creative or thrive when working on nontraditional projects to gain understanding. This activity really lets the students take the lead and control of their learning while it still being a fun and engaging activity which is beneficial not only to ELL students but students that need extra support.
The only cost for this grant comes from the actual product itself and a class set of markers.
