The goal of my grant Colorful Communication is to provide my students with fine point dry erase markers in an assortment of colors. Most of the students that attend my school are from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds. I would like to be able to provide my students with their own set of dry erase markers because school supplies cannot be shared due to the Covid virus.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 18

The grant I received funded expo-dry erase markers in multiple colors.  The students were provided packs of different colored Expo markers that they used to write on white boards during our Reading Horizons phonics lesson.  By using the various colors at different times during the lesson it provided the students with a visual distinction in what we were working on.  The students were able to copy the example I wrote on the board and were then able to working on marking vowels, slides and blends when we came to parts of the lesson independently.   The visual cues assisted students in identifying the vowels, the short and long sounds, as well as identifying blends in words and special vowel combinations. The students were also able to practice weekly sight words by color coding them with different letters in the alphabet.   The use of colored dry erase markers also allowed me to quickly circulate through the room looking at the boards to see who was able to understand the concept by checking to see where the various colored marks were in the words and if students needed extra support.  I feel it was beneficial for the class to use the colored dry erase markers and I am extremely grateful to Suncoast Credit Union for sponsoring the grant.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of my grant Colorful Communication is to provide my students with fine point dry erase markers in an assortment of colors. Most of the students that attend my school are from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds. I would like to be able to provide my students with their own set of dry erase markers because school supplies cannot be shared due to the Covid virus.

What will be done with my students

Sets of dry erase markers are constantly used in my elementary school classroom. Students use these markers daily during reading and phonics instruction. While being taught, students must write the letters they hear, various words and multiple sentences. They learn to distinguish between vowels (a, e I, o, u) and consonants by marking vowels and blends (combinations of letters) with different colors. Since we’ll be working with white boards, the dry erase markers are easily erased so each student can correct their errors during instruction while the teacher can support them before moving to the next task.
The dry erase markers will also be utilized during math instruction, as well. Students will practice writing numbers, adding, subtracting and drawing 2-dimensional shapes. White boards and dry erase markers allow the learning to be more colorful and communicates the new knowledge easily.

Benefits to my students

Sets of assorted dry erase markers will benefit my students in a variety of ways. First, they will create Colorful Communication with me as I observe their understanding of new knowledge. The various colors will allow them to identify different letters, words, sentences, numbers and shapes. The colors will create enthusiasm. The more excited they are about their learning, the more it will be ingrained into their long-term memory. Colorful Communication tools will allow students to build a strong foundation for the rest of their lives.

Budget Narrative

I have already purchased the white boards and several dry erase markers, but due to Covid-19, I now realize that my class will require individual sets of dry erase markers since the students will not be able to share sets at this time. Thank you so much for considering my grant and supporting the students of Collier County.
