Ever since introducing students to Kahoot! the game based learning platform whole class engagement has dramatically increased. Kahoot! has been a game changer when it comes to extracting students prior knowledge about a topic. All I have to do is get students to go onto Kahoot!, “play” the game individually or whole class and use the data I’ve collected from the “game” to assistant me with planning instruction. This helps cut unnecessary time wasted in the class on material students already know and it helps me to further assist those they might not already have background knowledge on a topic. Being able to have full assess to reports has been amazing. I can clearly see what types of questions students are struggling and how to challenge those who have mastered them. I’ve found that using Kahoot! as a review tool before assessment has tremendously increased their recall/retention of content. It also has helped students to feel more confident. Using Kahoot! also allowed students to learned the importance of good sportsmanship, due to the competitive nature of the game. When students are asking to finish an educational standards review Kahoot! game instead of going to recess you know as a teacher you have WON!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Obtain access for both ELA 4th grade classrooms to unleash a game-based learning platform that makes it easy to create, share and play learning games or trivia quizzes in minutes to enhance their learning experience while showing their understanding.

What will be done with my students

They get excited to compete against other students and to work collaboratively in ( social distance) groups to come up with agreed upon answers.

Kahoot, similar to Jeopardy, increases rigor and promotes the use of technology. This interactive "quiz" type game allows for immediate confirmation and feedback of the students' knowledge and understanding of skills. The students thoroughly enjoy challenging each other to see who can show their mastery of a skill the fastest.

These interactive "quiz type" tasks will be used to help introduce new concepts, gauge where students are in their learning, and recap on topics by replaying kahoots to improve knowledge retention.
